Another boxing day tragedy
Exactly three years to the day the Asian tsunami toopk about 168,000 lives in Indonesia, the country was hit by another calamity on boxing day yesterday, with dozens killed in landslides triggered by torrential rains. Landslides hit villages in the densely populated Karanganyar and Wonogiri districts in Central Java, with floods also sewlling in several areas. Volunteers dug desperately with their bare hands, hoping to find survivors while they waited for heavy equipment to arrive. At least 42 have been confirmed dead and scores missing in Central Java, with the number of casualties expected to rise.
